You Need to Learn to hear God’s Voice for Yourself

1-19-16 Revised 9-24-19

This message was given to me through the instruction of the Holy Spirit who lives inside every person that trusts in, clings to and relies on Jesus Christ, Yahshua ha Mashiach to be their Savior and Lord.

Do you realize that half of the reason that Jesus died was so that we could have the Holy Spirit living inside of us? He went away so that The Comforter could come and now we are the temples of the Living God, not built by human hands.

My friends, The Lord and I desire that you would hear God’s voice for YOURSELF. In the times that are coming upon this world you will need to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit and the Lord is leading me to show you how.

I believe that the biggest blockage we have to hearing God’s voice is unconfessed, unrepented of habitual sin even as Christians. This may surprise some of you but it is the truth. We all need to humble ourselves each day like David (Psalm 139:23-24 AMP) “Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.” What David was asking is that the Holy Spirit would reveal the sin that was in his heart so that there was nothing separating him from God. Seek the Lord each day to see what He lays upon your heart to confess and repent of. Don’t be prideful and think you don’t sin because that is sin in itself! Jesus will take your sin away and remember it no more if we totally give it over to Him. If you cannot give up a certain sin ask Him for the power to break yourself from it! Without the power of His blood we are powerless against sin and we will fail every time. The key here is your heart attitude, don’t ask for forgiveness and then go right back and do it again. If you long to be close to Yahshua will make yourself holy as He is holy because of your love for Him.

Next, If we want to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying we must enter into the spirit. This is the Secret Place of the Most High (Psalm 91). The best and easiest way that I have found is through the spiritual portal of praise and worship. Every morning I get up and I worship Him with music before I do anything else. I sit there or kneel or lay prostrate or with my hands raised, however the Spirit leads me. I’m not religious about it. At first, if you are not used to doing this, it may seem odd and you may just want to start with 10 or 15 mins, but you will want to go longer once His presence starts to overwhelm your entire being. After you put this into practice, an hour is like no time at all!  Take time and enjoy His presence! Just be still and soak yourself in His presence knowing that He loves you and longs for this time with you even more than you love it. After a while this will be your favorite time of the day no matter if you choose morning, noon or night. The important part is to DO IT! Personally I choose the morning because it starts my day out so I can walk in the spirit more successfully.

Brothers and sisters, please do NOT just come before Him with a big long prayer list. Lists have their place but just LOVE ON HIM. Treat Him like your lover because HE IS! He is your first love and you need to treat Him that way. There is NO ONE that loves you more and you should feel the same way about Him! FOCUS ON HIM AND ONLY HIM! Put away everything that distracts you from your alone time with Him even if it is ministry work for His kingdom. If you spend this intimate time with Jesus you will have much more to give to those you are ministering to.

Once I “enter in”, I usually begin to speak and sing in tongues. Yes, speaking in tongues is for today! (1Cor. 13:8-10 AMP) “Love never fails [it never fades nor ends]. But as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for the gift of special knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part [for our knowledge is fragmentary and incomplete]. But when that which is complete and perfect comes, that which is incomplete and partial will pass away.” Who and what is that which is complete and perfect? It is Yahshua and His kingdom! It is at that time that the gifts of the Spirit will pass away. Also Paul said to forbid Not speaking in tongues (1 Cor 14:39) and he said (1 Corinthians 14:18 AMP) “I thank God that I speak in [unknown] tongues more than all of you”. Tongues is always the perfect prayer from the Holy Spirit. He prays through you for things that you don’t even know that you have need of and it is always The Fathers perfect will. I also pray for some requests with my understanding, whatever I am led to pray. Each one should pray as they are led to or feel the unction or urging of the Holy Spirit.

Many of you will experience the Holy Spirit speaking to you during your worship time. If He hasn’t spoken to you yet and you desire Him to, you should stay silent and wait for Him to speak to you. You need to sit quietly before The Lord the way that Mary did. Many of us are like Martha running here and there, doing “The Lord’s work” but we hardly ever spend alone time with Him in quietness and stillness. When you make the practice of sitting at His feet every day and listening to the still small voice you just KNOW the difference of His thoughts from your own thoughts. Jesus said, My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. It is my belief that there are many times that the Holy Spirit speaks to His people but they do not recognize His voice.

The voice of the Holy Spirit probably won’t be audible, at least for me it isn’t, but thoughts will start to enter your head that aren’t yours. God’s voice is still and small for He is the humblest of all. You will need to turn down the volume of the outside world to hear Him, but I will tell you it is worth it! He might just say “I love you” or “I want you to do such and such” or ” I need you to work on this or that” Whatever it is obey Him. The longer you do this the clearer His voice will get clearer and you can have conversations back and forth with Him all day long. At times telling His thoughts from yours is a little harder, especially when it is concerning an important decision in your life such as a moving to a new location, getting a new job or family situations. That is when you ask Him to show you confirmation from a couple of different sources, maybe a godly friend, a pastor or spiritual leader or someone you know that hears The Holy Spirit.

It is my experience that if God is speaking to you about a certain thing He will NOT let it go until you do what He is asking of you. You will have an urge or an unction from The Holy Spirit to do something, and I suggest that you step out in faith and do it. Do not be afraid to step out especially if the thing you are feeling to do is good to do anyways. Do not be afraid to make a mistake or two at first. Satan will never tell you to do anything that is good. He will tell you that what you are hearing is all in your head and it’s all lies. If you feel like you should give someone encouragement by all means do it! If you believe you are to rebuke or reprimand someone give a lot more prayer to see if that’s really what He would have you do.
Whatever you do, do it in love!

I just want to point out that I am not yet perfect and occasionally I make a mistake. I do not hear His voice perfectly but I hear Him a lot better now than I even did last year. We all need to try to hear Him better, because one day the internet will be silenced and you will not be able to see or hear what the prophets are saying. (John 16:13 AMP) “But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father—the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future].”

Love and Blessings!

  1. Hi Jeff, this is great advice, about avoiding words and just worshipping with music to start with . I was offering sufferings and long litanies of intercessions for others, but thats not the same as getting into “relationship” with Him. I will have to find some appropriate music, along with peace from nosy house mates and discipline to do it. I have struggled before now with, whenever I get into a state of real grace in my spirit , I am heavily attacked by a state of sin the day following, which can set me off course for days. I am still struggling with that effect. I think he has tried to help me escape this, and I have attempted rebuking demonic influence at times , but I am caught in a deep dynamic, possibly with another person, which still eludes me to escape it. When I am feeling good, I can easily rise above this sin, but when I become weak or susceptible, i desire this sin too much to escape its pull. Anyway, that’s maybe a separate struggle. I worry that some people may be too damaged interiorly to sustain prayer, or have a deep avoidance or fear of personal intimacy. But I still desire this connection, and don’t want to give up hope that it may be possible. Peace and gratitude to you for your guidance in our efforts.

    1. Kevin, what you have written here is yet more support for spending personal intimate time with the Lord every morning. That way you are proactive instead of reactive. Worshipping the the Lord is an offensive weapon against the enemy. Dont give up! Rise up and grab that sword of praise and worship!

  2. Jeff, if we are praying for voices we will certainly hear them, but are they the right voices. There are many false prophets and many voices. I found that asking God questions is the key to hearing to hear from him, but we must let him decide how he will answer, for me he seldom uses a voice. He loves to speak to me through his word and with bubbles of knowledge coming from deep within, again no voice just a knowing, as if I had just hear or read it but I didn’t, it just shows up and I sense it in my spirit when something is coming. It is hard to describe but I do allow God to reveal his answers anyway he chooses. I feel it is dangerous to pray for voices or look for them, however when I do hear from the Lord it is loud and clear and no one has to tell me who it is. I was reading the word recently and the presence of the Lord showed up and the words on the page came alive and seemed to be singing to me but no words, then I began weeping as the Holy Spirit gathered up the beautiful words and gave them to me as a meal and I was so satisfied! I praised the Lord for hours and wept. I was praying for spiritual meat.

  3. Jeff thank you again for sharing with us your insight and comments on improving our prayer lives based on your personal experience. What wonderful suggestions. Always gain from you- how to better seek and improve ways to seek and hear from the Lord. The morning prayer and worship time for me is the best way to start your day..

  4. Brothers and sisters, please pray for me that I will hear His voice. I’ve been asking since 2015 and I still just haven’t received this gift. I’ve done all I know how to do, yet I still am not confident I am hearing Him. I desire this above all else…to be in direct communication with my heavenly Father and Bridegroom! God bless you all!

        1. GOD BLESS YOU JEFF. WE ARE VOID OF THE HOLY SPIRIT In OUR CHURCHES IN AMERICA! BISHOP HAMMON, CHRISTIAN INTERNATIONAL, SANTA ROSA BEACH WROTE A BOOK, 70 REASONS FOR SPEAKING IN TONGUES, THAT I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND and WE HAVE TO ACTIVATE OUR PRAYER LANGUAGE UNTIL OUR ENVIRONMENT SHIFTS FRON STINKIN THINKIN TO THE MIND Of CHRIST! We MUST SPEAK THE WORD Of THE LORD, BOLDLY,

      1. Dear Jeff, many of us are like Tami. Since 2013 I am doing everything you mentioned in the article … but no results. Often I get up at 3 o’clock at night and just wait silently without prayers for hour or two … but nothing. As true believer all I humbly ask is His voice, His order, His command, His anything ! This wilderness is so frustrating.

          1. Honestly, I don’t know. Probably not. At the moment, I am just pressing forward and hoping for any breakthrough.

      2. Hi
I have read some of your blogs. I need help hearing Jesus. I have tried a very long time. I am at the point now where what I hear does not usually seem to be Him. I feel I need a REAL spiritual breakthrough. I have asked for the HS and tried to pray and in tongues.
I have other problems as well. Could you please ask Him for a breakthrough for me and advise for my problem. I know I am not telling you what but he knows.

  5. Jeff, I am kinda new to your website. First heard of you thru Benjamin Faircloth. I’ve had the desire to speak and sing in tongues. In my youth, I believe I did. But my main concern now is, I want to know the voice of God speaking to me. I came upon this article and I am going to do this. It’s been my greatest desire! Please pray for me that God will reveal Himself to me. Thanks.

    1. I would answer that question No. All who seek Him find Him and all who find Him, He will speak to them, though most dont recognize its His voice. Many think His voice are their own thoughts. It takes practice and time alone with Him. The annioting HELPS but is not a requirement to hear His voice. Here is a good article explaining the annointing https://www.gotquestions.org/anointed.html
      Blessings Love and Peace!

      1. Thank you so much. I have heard Him say things to me in the past, guiding me to go somewhere, to do something, comforting me. They were quite audible and much of it was in my spirit sense, but it usually is only one sentence or one word, or a “knowing”. I have had so many voices in my head since childhood, and thank God many of the voices have gone since I have been born-again, but no baptism of the Holy Spirit, and I am still unable to have conversations. I guess I will just have to be patient, and I do trust in Him. One, more question if you don’t mind…..When a person receives the anointing of the Holy Spirit, there is no doubt about it for the person? …..ok, 2 questions?…..do you think the rapture might be this year? thank you so much and thank you for your site and the messages. …….much love from a sister in Christ….

        1. Deena, the more filled with the Holy Spirit that you are the less doubt you will have. When the Holy Spirit comes on strong and I think that’s what you mean by anointing, all fear, doubt hatred anger fighting Pride and every work of the flesh becomes lessened but they’re still can be a little that hangs around and it is very hard to get rid of all of it. That is the struggle that we have when we are in these flesh bodies. The Apostle Paul even had problems, Read this Romans 7:15For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
For us it is the constant struggle between the spirit and the flesh but the Fuller you are with the Holy Spirit the closer to God you will be and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
          Blessings love and peace sister

        2. Oh and the question about the rapture… I don’t even try to guess anymore, just be ready for him to come and you’ll be just fine! Just get rid of every bit of sin out of your life with the help of the Holy Spirit.

  6. Jeff, thank you so much for sharing with us your prayer life. It is a real blessing to know how to pray because prayer draws us closer to God. Your website has made Jesus so real in my life. Only now I realize how much the Lord loves us. Thank you so much Jeff.
