A Message About Christmas

12-23-17

Hello my brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus!
The Lord has been impressing upon my heart to give a message from Him addressing Christmas. It seems as of late that Christmas has really been coming under attack not only by the world but also from those in the faith. Before you say “Brother Jeff, don’t you know that Christmas is a pagan holiday and in the Roman Catholic Church took it and  Christianized it? ” I will tell you, Yes! I am well aware of the pagan origins of the winter solstice celebration and Saturnalia. I am also well aware that Jesus Christ, Yahushua HaMashiach was not born on December 25th and that it was most likely born on Rosh Hashanah in September on the Gregorian calendar. That is most widely used calendar in the world today. It is noted, as well, that the origins of the Christmas tree are pagan, though I have never bowed down and worshipped one and have never seen anyone do so. Also there has been much said about Jeremiah chapter 10 being about Christmas trees but I am not so sure that Jeremiah was not prophesying about people wearing and worshipping crucifixes. If you would like to look further look into this watch this video by Stephen DeNoon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVRC56FHcFM
I am also well aware that Christmas is now very much full of materialism and buying things for people with little or no thought about Jesus at all. Many people go into massive debt during the Christmas season and they pay for their folly for months afterward. This to me the worst part of this season and it comes out of selfishness, pride, envy and idolatry.
There are those out there that say we should not celebrate Christmas at all but instead celebrate Hanukkah during this time. Some of them even cite that Jesus himself celebrated Hanukkah and so should we; as well as the other feasts that are listed in the Old Testament. To me this is perfectly fine! If people like to celebrate Hanukkah as unto the Lord as well as the other feasts during the year, let them do so out of love for God and not because it is the law.
I believe that Romans 14 fits very well in this case. I will list the key verses here but I would advise you that all should go and read the entire chapter yourselves. Verse 1 “Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things.” This may well be one of the most powerful verses that we as Christians should live by but very few do. There is so much fighting and division in the body of Christ over things that really, in the eye of eternity, do not matter as much as loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and loving your neighbor as yourself.  Jesus quoted these two Commandments saying that all the other commandments were summed up in these two. Yet, no one is able in their own strength to keep even those two. Only by the power of the blood of Jesus and through Holy Spirit that lives within us can we keep them. If the law was perfect, Jesus would not have had to come to save us from our sins because we would have already been keeping the law and Jesus death and resurrection would not have been needful. The truth is that He is the only way to eternal life!
Verses 5-9 say “One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” I believe, you can observe a day or not observe a day but if we do it, do it as unto the Lord but we must be fully convinced in our own mind that is what we should do or it is sin. We should not do anything that we have not sought the Lord about. In other words if you want to celebrate Christmas do so unto the Lord, if you want to celebrate Hanukkah do so unto the Lord,  if you choose not to celebrate either holiday, do that unto the Lord, but do not condemn your fellow brother and sister in Christ for what they do or do not celebrate.
In verses 10-13 it says this, “But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God. “So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.” Let us not judge our brothers and sisters in Christ for celebrating Christmas or Hanukkah or not celebrating either. For God is our judge and we will answer to him for our actions whether they are out of love or not. If you are judging, fighting and or causing your brother or sister in Christ to stumble you will be judged by the Lord, the righteous judge, for your actions. But remember 1 John 1:9-10
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”
The rest of Romans 14 deals with eating and drinking or not eating and drinking things but I believe it applies as well to Christmas and Hanukkah. No day in and of itself is evil for God our Father has made all of them for us. It is not for us to say a day is Holy or it is evil. Just because some people in the past and maybe even in the present choose to do evil on certain days, it does not make that day evil for us for God has made every day holy for us by the Son. This also has to do with the Sabbath and worshipping on Sunday. As for myself I choose to worship my Lord every day of the week not just one day of the week. I give him my all, as best I can every day. I surrender to my Lord and God, Yahusha Hamashiach each and every day and I live, move and have my being in Him. My very breath is that of the Ruach Hakodesh, Holy Spirit and I would have it no other way. My goal is to be walking in the Spirit 24 hours a day and all 365 days a year. My wish for you all is the same! Follow me as I follow Christ.
In conclusion I would like to say that if you are walking in the Spirit at all times, you will be showing love to those around you. In westernized countries most people do know that Christmas is representative of Christ’s birth. Just think about miracle that the Creator of the Universe and everything in it, would humble Himself and become a newborn baby and then later die an excruciatingly painful death on a cross, ALL OUT OF HIS AMAZING LOVE FOR US! And if we are the ones who has a carriers of his Holy Spirit, how much more should we be showing love to the lost during this time of year? If you confess yourself to be a Christian, they are watching you.  If you condemn this day and you even tear it apart finding all the faults in it, what good is it to these that don’t know Jesus? Are you bringing them closer to Christ by being negative and condemning Christmas? I don’t think I have to tell you the answer to that. There are many people that go to church on Christmas or Christmas Eve that do not come any other time of year. And you can say what you want about the condition of the churches these days and I would agree with you, but I will say also say this; that the Lord can use a church service that mentions the name of Jesus more than you know. The Holy Spirit can work and move on that person’s heart and it could be a seed planted or it could result in their salvation right there and then. I am not talking about religion, I am talking about a true relationship with the creator of the universe Yahusha Hamashiach, Jesus Christ, Our Savior, our lover, our best friend, the one who will never leave us or forsake us and let us not ever turn Him away.
I’m sure there will be those that would disagree with me and that is fine. I do not condemn you but as for myself I will show the love of Jesus that He has put in my heart during this time of year and to the best of my ability all the rest of the year as well, for that is what we are all called to do.
Peace, love, provision and protection to you all.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!
Jeff Byerly

  3. Hi, Jeff.
    I am in agreement with your article because I believe your article speaks to a larger issue, in that not everything in life (at least as of now) is black and white. The truth is there are gray areas. And we can navigate those gray areas only with the aid of the Holy Spirit.
    Life never flummoxed the Lord. Each time the Jewish leaders brought up a trick question to trap him, the Lord’s answers left them flummoxed. This is because the Lord was not simply following the letter of the law. He was following the spirit of the law.
    One of the areas that you truly need to be led by the Holy Spirit is in an unequally yoked marriage. A believing husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the Church, which is good. But what if the wife will not submit to his leadership? What if she spurns his counsel? What if she loves him to bits and at the same time is in absolute disagreement with all his beliefs? She may crucify him with her words for his beliefs, but he would know better than to respond in like manner. Her attitude toward life may frustrate him, but he still has to build a family life with her. She would still be the mother of his kids. His family may want to go to the movies on Saturday while he may want to spend the day in prayer. How is this man to navigate the sea of unbelief he finds himself in?
    If someone does not have to deal with these kind of permutations and combinations, then so much the better, but life is full of such circumstances. But such circumstances are navigable if one allows oneself to be led by the Holy Spirit, in which case the person will walk in peace, joy, and liberty in the Lord.
    Believers do receive a call of separation unto the Lord, but we must also allow the Holy Spirit to decree the degree of separation and all the terms and conditions of it. Or else we may end up doing more harm than good.

  4. Matthew, with all due respect I disagree with you.
    Romans 14:5-6 says it plainly” One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord;and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks.”
    And here again in Col 2:16-17″ So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.”
    There are other scriptures I could post here but I will not beleaguer the point.
    Now that the Holy Spirit has been given to us we should walk it the Spirit at all times!
    But I will leave you with these scriptures that show how we should conduct ourselves.

    Romans 8:1-11 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
    9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
    Gal.5:13-18
    13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!
    16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
    Love and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

  5. Romans 14 is not talking about picking any number of days or particular days to worship. If that was the case, then the Holy Spirit would be instructing us to say worship God one day a week and then the other 6 do what you want. The language used is completely centered around food and whether to eat or not to eat. Additionally, the wording used is to “regard” or “esteem” which makes sense when talking about fasting. Lastly, Paul is not instructing the readers to ignore God’s appointed times because if he was doing that, then he was clearly teaching against the commandments and people who claimed he was doing that would clearly have good evidence that he was. In Acts, he took a vow to show that he kept, adhered to and taught the commandments of God. They were unable to prove that Paul did otherwise. Read Acts 6, they were unable to prove that Stephen did otherwise so they brought up false witness to testify against him. One last thing, Romans 14 is not about Sabbath. He never even mentions it. Spend some time studying Isaac, you will see that Abraham kept the feasts. Isaac’s conception and birth are tied to the same feasts that Yeshua was conceived and born. Which shows that the appointed times are not Jewish, but simply for God’s people and if Abraham kept them, hmmm… maybe we should as well?
    I am not saying that people who do not keep appointed times are not saved, I am saying that we should walk in obedience to God’s commandments and walk as Yeshua walked.

  6. I think we’ve missed something here. Worship is first and foremost what goes on in our hearts. I can worship God while doing the housework, so when I bend down to clean a cupboard or stand up with arms outstretched to put out the washing, I’m not worshipping the cupboard or the washing line. Our physical posture is always secondary to the attitude of our hearts. Or I can give my entire attention to God and take up an appropriate posture depending on how I’m feeling or if I want to pray on my knees etc. So if our hearts are right before God we can worship while doing other things, because what is in our hearts is the most important. The other thing to mention is that we can fool others by eg saying the right words but only God knows what is really happening inside us.

  7. Thank you for your excellent reply
    I must have missed this one
    It is the truth!
    I will add these verses as well
    Jeremiah 29:12-13
    Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

  8. Evan, That is an amazing story and it brought tears to my eyes and I felt the Holy spirit all over me as I read it!
    Thank you so much for sharing that with us.
    It seems there is nothing more to add…that story says it all!
    Love and peace my brother

  10. Жанат,
    read The Holy Scripture and do what is written there. Search and pray to Him with all your heart and you will find Him!
    “Ask and you will be given, search and you will find, knock and it will be opened”, said YAHUSHUA in The Gospel.

  11. ◄ Jeremiah 10 ►
    1Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel.
    2Thus says the LORD,
    “Do not learn the way of the nations,
    And do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens
    Although the nations are terrified by them;
    3For the customs of the peoples are delusion;
    Because it is wood cut from the forest,
    The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool.
    4“They decorate it with silver and with gold;
    They fasten it with nails and with hammers
    So that it will not totter.
    5“Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field are they,
    And they cannot speak;
    They must be carried,
    Because they cannot walk!
    Do not fear them,
    For they can do no harm,
    Nor can they do any good.”
    6There is none like You, O LORD;
    You are great, and great is Your name in might.
    7Who would not fear You, O King of the nations?
    Indeed it is Your due!
    For among all the wise men of the nations
    And in all their kingdoms,
    There is none like You.
    8But they are altogether stupid and foolish
    In their discipline of delusion—their idol is wood!
    9Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish,
    And gold from Uphaz,
    The work of a craftsman and of the hands of a goldsmith;
    Violet and purple are their clothing;
    They are all the work of skilled men.
    10But the LORD is the true God;
    He is the living God and the everlasting King.
    At His wrath the earth quakes,
    And the nations cannot endure His indignation.
    11Thus you shall say to them, “The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”
    12It is He who made the earth by His power,
    Who established the world by His wisdom;
    And by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens.
    13When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
    And He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
    He makes lightning for the rain,
    And brings out the wind from His storehouses.
    14Every man is stupid, devoid of knowledge;
    Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols;
    For his molten images are deceitful,
    And there is no breath in them.
    15They are worthless, a work of mockery;
    In the time of their punishment they will perish.
    16The portion of Jacob is not like these;
    For the Maker of all is He,
    And Israel is the tribe of His inheritance;
    The LORD of hosts is His name.
    17Pick up your bundle from the ground,
    You who dwell under siege!
    18For thus says the LORD,
    “Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land
    At this time,
    And will cause them distress,
    That they may be found.”
    19Woe is me, because of my injury!
    My wound is incurable.
    But I said, “Truly this is a sickness,
    And I must bear it.”
    20My tent is destroyed,
    And all my ropes are broken;
    My sons have gone from me and are no more.
    There is no one to stretch out my tent again
    Or to set up my curtains.
    21For the shepherds have become stupid
    And have not sought the LORD;
    Therefore they have not prospered,
    And all their flock is scattered.
    22The sound of a report! Behold, it comes—
    A great commotion out of the land of the north—
    To make the cities of Judah
    A desolation, a haunt of jackals.
    23I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not in himself,
    Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.
    24Correct me, O LORD, but with justice;
    Not with Your anger, or You will bring me to nothing.
    25Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You
    And on the families that do not call Your name;
    For they have devoured Jacob;
    They have devoured him and consumed him
    And have laid waste his habitation.

  12. Tim wins best comment for use of the word synopsis when talking about Christmas. Merry Christmas Timbo mate 😃 Nice one!

  13. Whos bowing down to idols Meranda mate? Youve lost me. No one is bowing down to trees . Personaly I dont put decs up but have no prob if anyone does. An idol is anything one puts before God. Mobile phone, football, facebook. Can someone explain why were talking about bowing down to wood?

  14. Our family attended a Christmas Eve service last night at our Church. I went with eyes open and looked at it with a more critical eye than the normal way I’ve done it all my life. As we were seated and waited for the service to start I prayed for revelation and a pure heart approaching this, thanking God for sending his precious Son to atone for us in the perfect sacrifice.
    You know what? I saw Christmas in a different way (from the perspective of a worship/praise/celebration, not the worldly Christmas). I paid more attention to WHAT the carols were saying. Christ’s birth was an AWESOME and GLORIOUS event – angels singing praises of His arrival to earth, 3 kings travelling from afar to worship Him. The sky even claimed His Glory! This was a huge event, arguably THE biggest event in history, except maybe His sacrifice on the cross! Why is it is covered in such detail in the Gospels? So many prophesies fulfilled, from the beginning of time. Truly the rocks would have shouted out His praises and glory if the angels didn’t, just as Jesus said when came into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey… and we shouldn’t be celebrating this blessed event? I felt His praises being lifted up as I sung along. Not that Jesus was born this actual day, but He was born fully God and fully Man and the biggest GIFT God could ever give us.
    The sermon was quite different too, a Revelation 12 Christmas story. Ending in a powerful call to accept Jesus as the only way to find forgiveness of sins, to realize a true change of ourselves through the Holy Spirit. To turn our hearts fully over to our Savior and King and let Him and His love transform our lives to be more like Him. Was a powerful message and many there were not Christians (people that attend only on Christmas). This message smacked them right in the face with the fact we are ALL sinful and hopelessly evil! Christ came because God loved us SO much. He is our only route to forgiveness and salvation, and our hearts need to change. 3 packed services – many not hearing this Gospel before! How sad it would be if they couldn’t be exposed to the truth of our need for redemption and the story of WHY He did WHAT He did for the ones He loves? We were encouraged to share with the downtrodden and unfortunate as we go into 2018 during the benediction.
    Something really amazing happened on the way home, I took it as confirmation from God that this was what was supposed to happen today. My wife wanted to grab a last minute gift for her mom, so we stopped at a store on the way home. My 16 year old daughter and I waited in the truck as my wife ran into the store. Out front was this homeless person sitting against the building under a blanket with your typical homeless “please help” sign. The Spirit said “help him” in my heart. I looked in my wallet and has a 5 and a 100 bill – “100” too. I don’t know why, but I said to my daughter “take this to that person (couldn’t even tell if it was a mans or woman) and tell him Jesus really loves him” She is like “a hundred bucks? Thats a lot isn’t it?” I said yes, but put it in her hand and said go share with him…
    She went over and crouched down with the person and spoke with (it ended up being a him) for quite a while, sharing with him Jesus loves him and listening to his story – which he went into quite a bit of detail. Apparently he had recently finished getting his welding ticket and was working making $6000 a month and then the bottom fell out of the industry that was employing all these welders. He went from feast to literally famine and was clearly struggling to survive and recover. He graciously accepted the gift and stated the money will only go to good things (not drugs/alcohol – and he wasn’t using these things at all). God wrenched my heart as I watched my daughter deliver an act of mercy and kindness with God’s love to this person – weeping in the truck.
    Then on top of all that – after she gets into the truck I ask her how it went… “oh, that was Ray” she said. “I have talked to him before, about a month ago” elsewhere in the city. She told us the story about what had happened and what he had been going through.
    We talked about it as we drove home then she mentioned that she prayed at the service that she could share with a homeless/needy person, to be an instrument and witness for Jesus. Shen didn’t even see him there and I turn around and give her some cash and say go forth… I’ve never asked her to do something like that directly before. And seemingly out of the blue from her perspective – an answer to prayer! And it being someone who she had had a previous encounter with? What are the odds? Simply amazing our God. Peace on earth and good will toward men, Christ has come!
    Impacted both of us (and hopefully Ray too) in a powerful way. I’m still sobbing for joy! You can’t make this stuff up.
    So I say, why should we be afraid to proclaim and celebrate the awesome and world changing act of love from our God and Father? Nimrod is nothing compared to Him, like a candle compared to the sun. I don’t acknowledge nimrod’s ability to hinder my worship of my God. My heart is His.
    Much like the LGBT community has hijacked the rainbow as their own, or triangles, circles, colors hijacked as evil symbols – it was all God’s first! Do we need to give up all things that could be associated with evil in a different context?
    More and more I am feeling no we don’t. Not definitively, but I feel God working and showing me many things today – and condemnation wasn’t part of it. Amazing love. Amazing grace.

  16. Thank you Nancy!
    I just wish people would choose to see the good in things instead of only the bad.
    Merry Christmas!

  17. Meranda,
    I don’t know if I made my point clear enough in this message but here is the heart of the matter.
    Psalm 118:24This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
    I will not give the devil ANY of my days! I will worship and pray to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ even on Halloween.
    The devil only has what people have given to him and he comes to steal kill and to destroy. Jesus came so we could have life and have it more abundantly!
    I just got off my face any spending almost 2 hours of alone time with y Lord,best friend and lover and He made no mention that I could’t do this today.
    Of course I didn’t make any mention of it being Christmas when I am in His manifest prescence because NOTHING ELSE MATTERS BUT HIM during that time.
    Now when I get up from this chair I will go and show the love of Jesus on this day.
    Most of the people around me ACKNOWLEDGE the birth of Jesus on Christmas day even though we know it wasnt on this day.
    In my humble opinion ANYTHING that draws attention to Jesus is a good thing!
    The devil is like a dog who lifts his leg and marks every tree, hydrant, pole or anything else he can urinate on.
    I say to him the Lord Rebuke You! Get out in the name of Jesus! YOU CANT HAVE ANYTHING THE LORD HAS MADE!
    This should be our attitude for Christmas day and EVERYDAY!
    Blessings,Love, Peace, Provision and Protection to you and Michael in the name of Yahushua HaMashiach!
    Jeff

  18. If you look at King Josiah he got rid of trees in the temple.
    Jeremiah 10 :4 For the customs of the peoples are delusion; Because it is wood cut from the forest, The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool. 4″They decorate it with silver and with gold; They fasten it with nails and with hammers So that it will not totter.
    Trees are specifically mentioned in the scriptures that talk about false deities.
    In fact, if you look in the scriptures nothing makes Elohim furious than people bowing down to idols.
    You need to look into the history of Christmas…. because you haven’t done any research- respectfully saying
    Meranda
