Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for an overhaul of the United Nations on Monday, saying its Security Council had failed to address the Syria conflict and other global challenges.
Erdogan gave an unabashed speech in Istanbul at the closing of a NATO meeting, where he slammed the Security Council’s concentration of power, reiterating that “the world is bigger than five.”http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/21/middleeast/turkey-un-erdogan-syria/
ISTANBUL — President Recep Tayyip Erdogan angrily threatened on Friday to open the floodgates of migrants into Europe again, apparently in response to a move to suspend talks on Turkey’s membership in the European Union.
“You did not keep your word,” the president said in a speech here, addressing Europe.
“You cried out when 50,000 refugees were at the Kapikule border,” he said, referring to the border crossing with Bulgaria, one of the busiest in the world even in normal times. “You started asking what you would do if Turkey would open the gates. Look at me — if you go further, those border gates will be open. You should know that.”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has unexpectedly announced that Turkey is seeking to directly overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Erdoğan’s call to citizens: Sell dollars for lira, gold, adding that there was no option other than cutting interest rates to spur growth.
Following his remarks in Ankara, the lira saw fresh lows against the U.S. dollar.
“Those who keep foreign currency under their mattress should come and turn them into lira or gold,” Erdoğan said in a speech to mark the opening of an automotive showroom complex in Ankara.
“Such moves will hurt some people’s game. Do not worry. We will destroy this game together. We saw such things in 2007 and 2008. I then said the problems would not affect Turkey. I am now saying the same thing. The problems will not even touch us,” he added.
In a speech on Tuesday, Erdogan condemned what he said was the failure of the United Nations in Syria and cast Turkey’s incursion in August, when it sent tanks, fighter jets and special forces over the border, as an act of exasperation.
“We are there to bring justice. We are there to end the rule of the cruel Assad, who has been spreading state terror,” Erdogan said.
